Transitioning to cloud-based ediscovery solutions has been a top priority for legal organizations, even before COVID-19. According to ILTA’s 2019 Technology Survey, 33% of firms responding have already made ediscovery a priority, and 15% indicated that they planned to do so in the next 12 months.

Fast forward to 2020 — COVID-19 is driving new urgency to move to the cloud, but the challenges are nothing new. A recent MariaDB survey revealed that 40% of IT professionals worldwide are now accelerating their move to the cloud. And, 74% of those surveyed said they expect to face new issues due to a second wave of the pandemic, and many of the same challenges with on-premises solutions continue to persist:
With on-premises ediscovery solutions, limited data accessibility and speed can be an issue, particularly with remote access, and the need to maintain and upgrade internal systems can result in costly downtime and resource unavailability. Additionally, limited license or seat capacity can hold up matters until more capacity is added or reallocated from existing cases.
There is also a limit to the litigation capabilities that an on-premises solution can provide. If more are needed, clients will need to take the matter out of the on-premises solution to a service provider, which undercuts the entire rationale of using an on-premises solution.
